There is a particular point in the evening when you realise you have been doing things all day. Answering. Driving. Cooking. Carrying. Looking at screens. Thinking about tomorrow.
A good evening ritual doesn’t need to be elaborate. In fact, if it involves twelve steps and an hour of free time, it probably isn’t going to happen very often.
Half an hour is enough.
The trick is to make those 30 minutes feel noticeably different from the rest of the day: warmer, quieter and a little less hurried.
Here’s how we do it.
Start before you get into the bath.
Put your phone somewhere you can’t absent-mindedly pick it up. Lower the lights. Find a clean towel. Open the bedroom window for a few minutes if the weather allows.
Then mist Rain-on-a-tin-roof Pillow Spray over your pillow and bedding.
Its eucalyptus, geranium and lavender scent is part of our Sleep & Rest collection and, more importantly, it begins to create an association: this smell belongs to the end of the day.
Spraying it now, rather than the moment your head hits the pillow, gives the fragrance a little time to settle while you bathe.
No notifications. No optimisation. Nothing to achieve.
Run the bath.
5–20 minutes: get into the water
Choose your bath according to what you feel like you need.
For a simple, mineral-rich soak, add our Relaxing Epsom Bath Salts with Halen Môn Sea Salt to warm running water.
They bring together Epsom salts with sea salt from the Menai Strait, produced by our sister company Halen Môn, and our relaxing eucalyptus, geranium and lavender scent.
Or, if the sea is calling, choose our Wild Seaweed Bath-in-a-Box.
It is about as close as we can get to putting a little piece of the Anglesey shore into the post: real seaweed and a bath, without the need to brave the Menai Strait in February.
Our Seaweed Bath Elixir is another easy option when you want the marine ritual without the whole seaweed bath.
Then stay there.
Fifteen minutes.
You don't have to meditate.
You don't have to listen to a podcast about becoming a better person.
You don't even need to read.
Just be in the bath.
One of the reasons we love bathing is that it creates a physical boundary around a piece of time. You cannot simultaneously empty the dishwasher, answer an email and reorganise a cupboard when you are sitting in warm water.
For fifteen minutes, nowhere else requires you.
20–25 minutes: look after the bits that need it
Get out, pat your skin dry and leave it just slightly damp.
Now reach for a balm.
Our Magic Sleep Balm with Seaweed is made with almond oil, coconut oil, sunflower oil, candelilla wax and bladderwrack extract, with lavender, geranium and eucalyptus essential oils.
Warm a small amount between your fingers and massage it into dry skin or use it on the pulse points, chest or soles of your feet as part of your bedtime ritual.
The oils and waxes help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss, while the familiar scent carries on from the bath.
This is also a good moment for hands and elbows: the unglamorous places that tend to reveal just how much weather, washing and general life they've encountered.
Take your time with it.
Five minutes of applying something slowly feels very different from putting it on while simultaneously looking for your keys.
25–30 minutes: go to bed before you find another job
This may be the most important bit.
Do not leave the bathroom and suddenly decide it is the ideal moment to fold laundry.
The kitchen can wait.
Go to bed.
Your pillow already carries the soft scent of Rain-on-a-tin-roof Pillow Spray. The same lavender, geranium and eucalyptus notes have followed you from bath to balm to bedroom, so the whole ritual feels connected rather than like a collection of separate products.
Read a few pages of something that isn't illuminated from underneath.
Notice how quiet the house is.
Listen to the actual rain on the roof, if Anglesey happens to be providing some.
And then turn out the light.
